AI feature vs. AI product
Definition
An AI feature is one capability inside a product that already does a job. An AI product is the whole thing built around the model. The distinction decides what a mediocre model output actually costs — being ignored, or eroding trust in the surrounding product.
An AI feature is one capability inside a product that already has a job — a clause summarizer inside a contract tool, an inbox triager inside an email app, a recommendation panel inside a storefront. An AI product is the whole thing built around the model: the model is the value, not an accent on top of an existing workflow. Most teams shipping AI today are shipping features, and features have to earn their place next to parts of the product that already work.
Why it matters
A mediocre standalone AI product gets ignored — users leave and don't come back. A mediocre AI feature is worse: its failures spill onto the parts of the product users already relied on, and the whole thing starts to feel less trustworthy. The bar for a feature is higher than for a product, not lower.
